Breed History ♜
The Old English Sheepdog has one of the most unknown origins but it is thought they originated in southwest England and were used to guard livestock against wolves. By the 19th Century, the OES were used to herd livestock to market and would often have their tails docked to show that they were a working dog and therefore exempt from tax. This gave them the nickname “Bobtail”, which is still sometimes used today. Although at one time they were a very popular breed, they now appear on the watch list of the UK Kennel Club’s endangered breeds.

Living Conditions ⌂
OES are big dogs who are not particularly suited to apartment living. Ideally, an Old English Sheepdog would live in a home with plenty of land on which to exercise and explore. As an intelligent, working breed they need at least an hour of exercise a day to stay healthy, stimulated and happy.
Grooming ✄
This breed has hair galore! A double coat means that the inexperienced dog owner may need some help and training as to how to groom effectively. OES can need up to four hours of grooming a week to keep their coat looking tip-top.
Fun fact ♥
As with many other herding dogs, some Old English Sheepdogs can have a tendency to “herd” small children by circling and poking them!
