Breed History ♜
As with many breeds, the exact origins of the French Bulldog are unknown. Many believe that they were bred in England during the Industrial Revolution as a smaller version of the beloved English Bulldog. When lace workers headed over to France to find work, they took their small, bat eared Bulldogs with them and they were an instant hit. Breeders were very busy meeting the high demand for the new ‘French style Bulldog’. It’s believed that Frenchies have been in Australia since the 1940s when they were brought over by the English.
Personality Traits & Trainability ★
French Bulldogs are playful, intelligent and affectionate. They are happiest when they are around people, especially their owners, and are generally good with other animals. Frenchies are intelligent and easy to train but their free spirited nature can result in some stubborn behaviours so they need motivation – treats – when learning a new behaviour. Frenchies need strong leadership from their owner and can feel insecure without it. Although they are generally quiet dogs, French Bulldogs are good watch dogs and will alert owners to intruders.

Living Conditions ⌂
French Bulldogs can entertain themselves pretty well indoors and so are a good breed for apartment living. A walk a day when it is cool outside will help maintain a healthy weight and work off any extra energy they may have.

Grooming ✄
Very little grooming is required for French Bulldogs. No trimming or stripping is needed and shedding is minimal, although not non-existent.

Fun Fact ♥
Due to their heavy heads, French Bulldogs cannot swim. So if you’re planning a life on the water for you and your pup, this is not the breed for you!
