Most Cat Owners know that a bare toilet paper roll can be a cat toy in its own right. Whether they’re treating it as a soccer ball, chew toy, or scratching post, the humble toilet paper roll reigns supreme. However, the fun doesn’t need to stop with the toilet paper roll’s base form. Much like a kitty-pleasing Pokemon, this cardboard wonder can morph into all manner of cat toys. While the market is full of top notch pre-made cat toys, sometimes it can be fun to DIY. Read on to learn how to make three forms of feline fun from the most modest of household items!

#1. Shredded Tube Cat Toys
Let’s begin with the simplest of the toilet roll-inspired cat toys. In fact, all you need to create this gift is a few empty toilet rolls, a pen, and some scissors. You can start by dividing the roll into thirds with a pen. Next, cut a row of incisions at either end of the toilet roll that reach the one-third mark. As you see with the top left toilet roll in the image above, your toilet roll will then have fringes. Roll it towards your cat, and voila! They’ll have an item they want to tear to shreds – which, by cat standards, is a wonderful thing. Such a trinket will not only keep them busy – it will also keep them mobile. A mobile kitty is a healthy kitty, so cat toys like this can help hefty felines to lose weight.

#2. Kitty Treat Treasure Chest
This homespun playset will test your cat’s focus, problem-solving skills, and reflexes. What’s more, it will reward them for their efforts with a tasty treat!
To construct the Kitty Treat, you’ll need:
- sticky tape
- a half dozen toilet rolls
- a coloured piece of cardboard
- a packet of cat treats
To begin, sticky tape the six toilet paper rolls together in a two-by-three formation (as above). Next, tape the sheet of cardboard to one side of the row of toilet paper rolls. By resting the cardboard sheet on the floor, you’ll then be able to sprinkle your cat treats into the exposed side of the toilet paper rolls. Once each of the six rolls bears a few treats, rest the treasure chest on its side against the wall. Before you know it, your kitty will be pawing into each of the tubes, trying to retrieve their tasty bounty! So long as the treasure chest still harbours treats, your feline will keep playing with it.

#3: Straw and Cardboard Cat Toys
Another salt-of-the-earth toy that will keep your kitty entertained, this bad boy is almost as easy to prepare as #1. Simply take a pen and create three to four puncture points in a toilet paper roll. From here, thread different coloured straws through the punctures, as above. To you, this might look like a pre-schoolers attempt at making a crafts project. To your cat, though, it will provide something to chew, swat, and chase.
